From Forest To Living Room: Aceh’s Rattan Furniture SMEs

Aceh has long been seen as a province with strong potential for furniture and craft thanks to its rich raw materials. Government reports highlight that wood- and rattan-based furniture remain a backbone of local craft because the raw materials are relatively easy to find.

Today, that potential is visible in small and medium rattan furniture businesses. In Banda Aceh, for example, UMKM Rotan Mano Aceh Lestari produces classic rattan furniture sets such as sofas, chairs, and tables. Artisans there say production can still grow because of strong raw-material availability, although marketing is still focused mainly on the domestic market.

Price-wise, Aceh’s rattan furniture is positioned as quality home investment: living-room sets are reported to sell between roughly Rp3.5 million and Rp14 million, depending on size and design.

The signature of Aceh’s rattan furniture SMEs is handmade, sturdy, and classic: pieces that feel at home in Acehnese houses, cafés, and hotels, with room to grow into wider national and export markets.
