In Aceh Besar, Gampong Kueh is emerging as one of the province’s most important rattan craft centers. The village is now widely recognised as a sentra kerajinan rotan, where households turn raw rattan into woven trays, baskets, furniture, and home accessories.
What makes Gampong Kueh unique is its use of rotan slimit, a local Acehnese rattan species that is small in diameter yet very strong. This slimit rattan is harvested in the mountain forests of Aceh Besar and sold as a key raw material for furniture and UMKM craft, giving the village a steady local supply.
Dekranasda Aceh and Dekranasda Aceh Besar are actively coaching 60+ artisans in Gampong Kueh, hoping to make the village an icon of Aceh rattan as well as a small tourist destination for visitors who want to see weaving and production up close.
Gampong Kueh shows Aceh’s rattan signature clearly: local material, village-based know-how, and growing potential as a craft-and-tourism hub.
